Like most attorneys, Jennifer Mitchelson’s desk is chock-full of documents and files. But behind her on the wall, enjoying pride of place between the certificates of achievement, are crayon drawings and finger paintings—the proud handiwork of her children. Together, they present an accurate collage of Jennifer’s life and of the things she holds most dear.
Moving from New York to Connecticut to Texas to California, all before the age of 12, Jennifer spent her high school years in Trumbull, Connecticut and attended Providence College, graduating magna cum laude in 1992. After graduating from Columbus School of Law at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., cum Laude in 1995, Jennifer began her legal career at a small real estate conveyancing firm in Quincy, MA.
She then moved to the Boston firm of Deutsch, Williams, Brooks, DeRensis, and Holland, PC in 1997, where her practice consisted of residential and commercial lending as well as representing municipal clients.
While there, Jennifer obtained an LLM in Taxation from Boston University and her practice expanded to include income, gift and estate tax issues, preparation of personal and fiduciary income tax returns, and representing clients before the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR).
During this time Jennifer also formed strong professional bonds with a group of colleagues who shared her desire to help clients throughout their life cycle. Jennifer joined many of those friends and former colleagues in the Trust, Estates, and Probate Department at Rubin and Rudman in May 2001. Today they mesh their interests, bridging any gaps in expertise and providing a full spectrum of services to clients.
At Rubin and Rudman Jennifer found both a dynamic legal environment and support for balancing her family and work life. Today, Jennifer and her husband Tim, in-house counsel for South Shore Savings Bank, live in Hanover with their two sons, Alex age six, and Charlie age two.
“Doing your job well and being able to have a family and do that well too can be a challenge. You need a little flexibility and at Rubin and Rudman it’s possible—especially with the type of law that I practice.”
“I started out doing residential real estate transactions and then realized that my clients had other life issues that would, in time, lead to the need for estate planning. And now, because tax laws regarding income, gift, estate and tax-exempt matters are constantly in flux, with my background in taxation, I’m able to be a knowledgeable resource for my clients and colleagues throughout the firm.”
Jennifer is also a regular guest on Rick Shaffer’s “The Money Show” (WTKK 96.9 fm) where she discusses estate planning issues.
