Katherine Donlan

Karen focuses her practice on developing and implementing sophisticated estate, gift, and generation-skipping transfer tax plans for high-net-worth individuals and families.

She helps clients structure comprehensive estate plans tailored to their personal and financial goals, with an emphasis on preserving wealth and supporting multigenerational planning.

Her work includes drafting a full range of estate planning documents, including wills, revocable trusts, durable powers of attorney, health care proxies, and HIPAA releases. Karen also has deep experience with advanced planning strategies such as generation-skipping dynasty trusts, irrevocable life insurance trusts (ILITs), grantor retained annuity trusts (GRATs), qualified personal residence trusts (QPRTs), and charitable remainder trusts (CRTs).

Karen advises clients on lifetime wealth transfers involving real estate, life insurance, and closely held business interests. She regularly prepares federal gift tax returns and counsels on the formation and administration of private foundations and other charitable vehicles.

Her work in Tufts University’s Gift Planning Office—where she cultivated and secured complex planned gifts including charitable trusts, annuities, endowed funds, and gifts of art—continues to shape her thoughtful and strategic approach to philanthropic planning. Clients value her ability to align tax-efficient planning with deeply personal goals, whether for family legacy, charitable impact, or both.

Karen is known for her collaborative style and for translating complex trust and tax matters into clear, practical guidance that helps clients protect and plan for what matters most.
