Paul J. Hodnett
Long before he became a trusted advisor to public and private employers across Massachusetts, Paul Hodnett was spending time in district court as a law student—absorbing the real-world dynamics between police officers, attorneys, and the bench.
That early exposure to public service shaped his approach to labor and employment law: hands-on, pragmatic, and always focused on the people involved.
Paul’s career started on the union side, where, unlike many young lawyers, he immediately engaged in direct client work—negotiating police contracts and representing officers in disciplinary matters. Now, with decades of experience on both sides of the table, Paul concentrates his practice on helping employers prevent workplace disputes before they escalate. He regularly advises municipalities, school committees, and private employers—ranging from two dozen to over a thousand employees—on performance management, risk mitigation, and compliance with a constantly changing legal landscape.
In an era where state and federal laws frequently expand employee rights and protections, Paul is a valuable resource for employers seeking clarity and confident guidance. His public sector clients, in particular, rely on him to help navigate not only budgetary constraints but also the heightened scrutiny that comes with government service. Whether advising a school district, representing a town in arbitration, or responding to a civil rights claim, Paul’s priority is to find practical solutions that protect both organizational integrity and public trust.
Successfully Negotiated the End of a Statewide Illegal Work Stoppage
Early in his career, Paul played a pivotal role in resolving an illegal work stoppage that had disrupted operations in correctional facilities across the Commonwealth. His efforts led to a successful negotiation and return to normal operations without the need for litigation.
Averted School Bus Strike on Eve of Deadline
Paul has repeatedly helped a major school bus transportation provider reach last-minute agreements with the union representing its drivers. In each case, he facilitated productive negotiations that prevented a strike, avoiding hardship for students, parents, and the city’s public school system.
Resolved High-Stakes Public Sector Personnel Conflict Without Litigation
When a municipal client sought to remove a department head under tense circumstances, Paul crafted a resolution that preserved the reputations of both the department leader and the city manager. Drawing on longstanding relationships with both individuals, he negotiated a dignified exit that maintained community trust and prevented public disruption.
