Lisa M. Cukier
Few attorneys command the intersection of matrimonial law, trust and estate litigation, service as trustee and conservator, trust and estate planning, and private client strategy with the insight, creativity, authority, and discretion that Lisa brings to her work.
Trusted by judges, colleagues, and clients alike, Lisa is known for top-flight resolution of high-conflict, high-net-worth matters where family, wealth, and capacity collide.
Her practice focuses on complex trust and estate controversies, high-asset matrimonial disputes, fiduciary appointments, and legal interventions in cases involving diminished capacity and undue influence. Lisa counsels individuals, families, and family offices, as well as family trustees and family businesses, as they navigate emotionally charged transitions—such as divorce, incapacity, death, interfamilial conflict, and external vulnerabilities — crafting legal solutions that protect both financial stability, legacies and personal dignity.
Equally strategic and intuitive, Lisa is known for decoding nuance, anticipating underlying or covert dynamics, and designing action plans that lead even the most contentious matters toward resolution. Whether managing intrafamily discord, representing family members where the patriarch or matriarch is vulnerable to exploitation, or guiding clients through blended family complexities, she balances calm authority with unwavering aggressive advocacy.
Trustee for High-Profile Global Client with Dementia Diagnosis
Served as a concierge-level, high-touch trustee for an ultra-high-net-worth individual with international political influence and business interests. After the client was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Lisa strategically protected his wealth, business holdings, and public image throughout his cognitive decline. Her representation included negotiating the discreet sale of high-value assets—including a private jet, fine art, and luxury real estate—resigning the client from corporate boards, and overseeing private medical care and aging-in-place arrangements.
High-Stakes Divorce Resolution for Ultra-High-Net-Worth Clients
Successfully resolved numerous complex matrimonial matters involving marital estates ranging from $15 million to $500 million. Lisa protected intricate asset portfolios including family trusts, private investment fund holdings, and atypical asset classes. She also secured favorable parenting plans and custody outcomes, particularly in cases involving parental conflict over children with special needs.
Conservatorship to Stop Financial Exploitation by Romantic Interloper
Used conservatorship law to intervene on behalf of an aging client being financially exploited by a much younger individual who feigned romantic interest. Lisa quickly leveraged court authority to unwind improper financial transfers, recover misappropriated gifts, and revoke estate plan changes that benefited the interloper. She terminated the exploitative relationship and restored control to the client’s family before further harm could occur.
Family Business Shielded in Divorce Proceedings
Protected a multi-generational family business during a high-conflict divorce involving one of its owners. Lisa successfully blocked the opposing spouse’s access to proprietary data and sensitive financials, prevented acquisition of voting shares or board influence, and designed a settlement structure that delayed any payout until a future liquidity event—preserving both operational stability and strategic control for the business.
Victory in Trust and Estate Litigation Between Step-Siblings
Prevailed in a contested will and trust dispute between siblings and step-siblings in a blended family, where allegations of lack of capacity and undue influence were raised. Lisa successfully upheld her clients’ rights under an estate plan that aligned with the decedent’s long-expressed wishes, while navigating the risks of an in terrorem clause that could have resulted in forfeiture if not properly addressed.
Expert Witness in Complex Fiduciary and Legal Malpractice Matters
Retained as an expert witness by prominent litigation and insurance defense firms to evaluate claims involving legal malpractice, excessive fiduciary fees, and breaches of best practices in estate and trust administration, conservatorship management, and asset protection planning in divorce and prenuptial contexts.
Mental Health and Substance Abuse Crisis Intervention for Families
Advised families navigating mental illness and substance use crises affecting a loved one. Lisa deployed strategic tools such as guardianship, conservatorship, involuntary psychiatric commitment, and power-boosted health care proxies and durable powers of attorney to establish safety and longer-term recovery frameworks. She also developed incentive trusts and recovery contracts to support treatment compliance and family reintegration and recovery maintenance.
