John J. McGivney, Rubin and Rudman Managing Partner, Named 2024 Top 20 Managing Partner by Mass Lawyers Weekly

March 25, 2024

Boston, MA (March 25, 2024)— Rubin and Rudman is pleased to announce that Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly has named John J. McGivney, to its inaugural 2024 Top 20 Managing Partner list.

The inaugural award recognizes Managing Partners who lead Massachusetts law firms with more than 30 attorneys, have been in the role for at least three years, are visible leaders in the local community, and exhibit leadership in all aspects of the firm.

McGivney joined Rubin and Rudman as an Equity Partner in 1997, and for nearly seven years, he has been at the helm of the Boston-based full-service law firm with 85 attorneys. As Managing Partner and a member of the firm’s Executive Committee, McGivney is responsible for the firm’s overall strategic business plan, direction and mission. During his tenure as Managing Partner, Rubin and Rudman has seen significant growth in terms of revenue, number of attorneys, community engagement, and philanthropy. Notably, McGivney has demonstrated a fierce commitment to advancing the firm’s diversity initiatives and creating a culture of collaboration and inclusivity.

Robert Vigoda, a Partner in Rubin and Rudman’s Trusts and Estates Department and member of the firm’s Executive Committee, joined the firm in 2009. “Lawyers by nature can be difficult to manage, making law firm management uniquely challenging. In the seven years that John has served as Managing Partner, I’ve witnessed a marked increase in collaboration and collegiality among the lawyers in the firm, which is attributable in large part to John’s efforts to bring on lateral attorneys with complementary practices. John has a vision for Rubin and Rudman that everyone has bought into, as reflected in the firm’s growth over the last several years.”

As a litigator, McGivney has tried nearly 40 cases in state and federal trial courts, has arbitrated numerous matters, and has served as an arbitrator and certified mediator in civil litigation. Additionally, he has briefed or argued over 25 appeals in various areas of civil law in the Supreme Court of the United States, the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, and the Massachusetts Appeals Court. He has also settled thousands of cases for both plaintiffs and defendants, including recoveries for plaintiffs of nine-figure, eight-figure, and seven-figure settlements.

“Having recently been promoted to Equity Partner and Chair of Rubin and Rudman’s Real Estate Department, I am a product of the culture shift in the firm since John assumed the role of Managing Partner,” said Andrea Y. Toulouse. His commitment to advancing women and young attorneys at the firm is commendable. He is a staunch advocate for the firm’s DEI program and community engagement, added Toulouse. “Thank you, John, and congrats!”

A “double Eagle,” McGivney received a J.D. cum laude from Boston College Law School and an A.B. magna cum laude from Boston College. He has been recognized by Best Lawyers in America® from 2008-2023 for Insurance Law and Mass Tort Litigation / Class Actions – Defendants, and also named “Lawyer of the Year” for Mass Tort Litigation / Class Actions – Defendants, in Boston, 2022. McGivney has also been recognized in Boston Magazine’s Top Lawyers, Civil Litigation since the publication’s inaugural edition in 2022.
